Ladies notch home-opening win over Geneva

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Ladies volleyball team improved to 4-1 this season with a four-set victory over Geneva College on Friday night as part of the team's annual Invitational.

Kenyon had contributions from many, including three players with double-digit kill totals and five with at least 11 digs. Mackenzie Bruzzio continued her solid play with a team-high 16 kills. Defensively, Rachael Thorson notched 36 digs for the second time this season.  That tied for the third-best, single-match output in program history. She reached that total a week ago against McDaniel College. Senior Jensen Shurbert added a match-high 37 assists.

With the score tied 17-17 in the opening set, the Ladies reeled off a 4-0 run with kills from Delaney Swanson and Bruzzio. Kenyon's 21st point of the set then came on a block assist from Bruzzio and Schuyler Stupica. Geneva got two within two (21-19) after a Ladies attack error, but Kenyon closed the set with four straight points ending with a Thorson ace.

In set two, the Ladies raced out to a 13-5 lead following a Shurbert kill. But the Golden Tornadoes were able to get within three (19-16) as they hit a 5-0 stretch with kills from Alexies Jordan, Kasey Costal and Erica Hughes. That was the closest Geneva got, though, as Kenyon scored the next two points and later won 25-19.

Geneva held off from being swept in the third. With the set tied at 15, the Golden Tornadoes hit another 5-0 run which concluded with a Kenyon error. Swanson pulled the Ladies to within two, 20-18, after a kill, but the home team got no closer.

In the fourth, Geneva got a kill from Costal that put them up 9-4. The Ladies started chipping away at the deficit and later tied it at 18 after a kill from Alexi Donnelly. Just a few sequences later, Kenyon took the lead for good. Shurbert found Swanson for the team's 21st point and they didn't look back as Bruzzio ended the match with her 16th kill.

Kenyon will play two more matches tomorrow. At 1 p.m. they'll face Muskingum University and at 3 will play Transylvania University.
