GAMBIER, Ohio – After being shutout in its first two games of the 2017 season, the Kenyon College women's soccer team turned the tables Saturday. A pair of second-half goals and a solid performance from sophomore goalkeeper
Jillian Countey resulted in a 2-0 victory against the visiting Washington and Lee University Generals.
The two Kenyon goals occurred within a three-minute span and were both booted in by freshman
Samantha Hayes. First, at the 62:02 mark, junior
Brianna Maggard assisted Hayes on what was her first collegiate goal, as well as the Ladies' first goal of the season.
Then, at the 64:59 mark, Hayes struck again. This time the scoring play developed off a corner sent in by freshman
Caroline McNeer. Her pass into the box found sophomore
Fallon Raviol, who then fed Hayes and helped put the Ladies up by two.
Throughout the game, it was the Washington and Lee offense that created more opportunities. The Generals outshout the Ladies 6-2 in the first half and 17-9 for the game. Countey, however, kept them off the board by making nine saves. Six of her saves occurred in the second half. Countey, who's now played in net for two of the Ladies' three games this season, has a 0.48 goals against average and .938 save percentage.
The win moved Kenyon's record to 1-2-0, while the loss dropped Washington and Lee to 1-1-0.
The Ladies return to Mavec Field for another home game Sunday. They take on the Dominican University Stars at 1 p.m. Dominican will enter the game with a 3-0-1 record after chalking up a scoreless tie at Denison University on Saturday.
