Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot-shooting Hiram deals loss to Lords

HIRAM, Ohio – The Hiram College Terriers shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and 62 percent from three-point range during their Saturday evening 99-77 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Kenyon College men's basketball team.

The red-hot Terriers, now 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the NCAC, entered the game as winners of nine of their last ten contests, including Wednesday night's upset victory over No. 17-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Lords, now 5-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play, were coming off one of their best offensive performances of the season in a win at Oberlin College, but the momentum from that game didn't carry over to Hiram.

The host Terriers scored the first eight points of the contest and never looked back. Three-pointers from Kenyon senior Phillip Crampton twice got the Lords within six points, but that's as close as they would get in the first half of play. Crampton had 11 points in the half and finished with a team-high 16.

Hiram shot 19-for-32 (59.4 percent) in the first half, including a 5-for-6 showing (83.3 percent) from long range. Jalen Kirksey scored 11 points in the half and was one of four different Hiram players to sink his first three-point attempt of the game.

Kenyon moved on to second-half action trailing 45-35, but that ten-point margin only expanded as the Terriers used the next ten minutes to run away with the game. During that span, Hiram went on a 36-18 run and opened up a 28-point lead, its largest of the game.

Led by Kelvin Jones' ten points, the Terriers had 11 different players score at least two points in a 54-point second half. At game's end, Jones led all players with 19 points. Brevin Dye had 13, while Isaiah Matthews scored 14 and Kirksey finished with 13 for Hiram.

Overall, the Terriers shot 40-for-67 (59.7 percent). They were 13-for-21 (61.9 percent) from beyond the arc and were 6-for-8 (75.0 percent) at the free throw line. Kenyon ended up 28-for-65 (43.1 percent) overall, 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from long distance and 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) at the charity stripe.

Joining Crampton as Kenyon double-digit scorers were Ben Stern with 13, Alex Laub with 12 and Will Sigl with 10 points. Laub also had a team-best five rebounds, while Matt Shifrin contributed six points, four assists and four rebounds.

Both Kirksey and Jones had ten rebounds for Hiram, which owned a 41-26 advantage on the boards.
