Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies have no trouble with Terriers

GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing at Tomsich Arena for the first time in six games, the Kenyon Ladies dialed up a 62-34 victory against Hiram College on Saturday in North Coast Athletic Conference action. The win improved Kenyon to 14-3 and 7-1 in the NCAC while Hiram dropped to 7-10 and 3-5.

Kenyon's defense was outstanding limiting the Terriers to their lowest point total and shooting percentage (24.5%) of the season.

Offensively, Paige Matijasich continued her fine play with her tenth straight double-figure scoring effort registering a game-high 14. She also tied for the game-high in rebounds (6) with teammate Lane Davis. Both Jessica Gerber and Ellie Schaub scored 12 points while Gerber also dished out a season-high eight assists. Additionally, Sharon Hull scored nine and Griffin Tullis added six points, five rebounds and two assists.

In all, eight different players scored as the Ladies hit 47.2 percent from the field and made half of their 14 three-point attempts.

The Terriers possessed just one lead in the game, a layup right from the get-go by Bri Burgos. Two possessions, later Matijasich drained a three-ball from the left wing moving the score to 3-2.

Amanda Holzman tallied a layup a couple minutes later bringing the count to 5-4 before Kenyon hit a run. A 10-2 stretch capped off by a Schaub three-pointer lifted the Ladies to a 15-6 lead and they took a 15-9 lead into the second.

In the second, the Ladies forced three misses on Hiram's end to start the quarter while sinking 3-of-4 on their side. A Tullis jumper at 7:48 pushed Kenyon ahead 21-9, and less than two minutes later, Hull's jumper moved the count to 25-11. The Ladies held Hiram to 2-of-10 shooting in the period and took a 25-14 lead into the locker room.

After the break, Kenyon extended its lead. A 6-0 run to start the period forced a timeout by the Terriers. However, that did not slow down the Ladies who raced to a 21-point lead (40-19) with 3:48 left after a Gerber layup.

Fourth-quarter action brought as big a lead as 28 points (62-34) after Alexi Donnelly hit a free throw. Over the second half, Kenyon's defense never allowed Hiram to get anything going holding the visitors to 25 percent shooting (7-of-28).

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date on January 17 at 6 p.m. against The College of Wooster.
