Ladies fend off Fighting Scots, 62-55

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team pushed away a pesky College of Wooster squad on Wednesday night 62-55 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Tomsich Arena.

Paige Matijasich led Kenyon with a game-high 22 points as it improved to 15-3 and 8-1 in the NCAC. On the other side, Wooster dipped to 4-13 and 2-6 in league play.

In addition to Matijasich's performance, juniors Sharon Hull and Jessica Gerber also aided in the win. Hull tallied 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting while Gerber contributed 11 points, three assists and two steals. Senior Griffin Tullis was able to register game-highs with six assists and a match a career best with 11 rebounds.

With the score tied 4-4 a little over two minutes into the game, the Ladies got back-to-back threes from Matijasich and Gerber which helped spark a 13-4 run to close the period. Kenyon got one more long ball as Hull drilled a contested shot from the top of the key at the buzzer moving the count to 17-8.

After shooting just 1-for-13 in the first period, Wooster came back in the second with the use of the low-post area. The Fighting Scots' first four makes all were shot in the paint, two of which were scored by Akwia Tilton. With 7:21 left, Wooster was down six, 22-16. Later, the visitors pulled the score to 28-26 after another layup, this time from Erica Roberts.

That remained the score until halftime as Wooster tallied 10 points in the paint. They were also aided by an 11-of-14 performance at the foul line while Kenyon didn't attempt a single foul shot.

Early in the third, four straight points from Roberts gave Wooster a 33-30 advantage. However, back-to-back jumpers from Hull helped the Ladies regain the lead at 36-33 with about six minutes left. By the end of the quarter, Kenyon had gone up nine, 48-39, after Ellie Schaub swished through a three-ball from the left side.

Fourth-quarter action saw Kenyon extend its lead to as many as 15 points (54-39) after another Hull three-pointer at 5:33. The closest Wooster was able to get was seven points with less than a minute left.

Next up for Kenyon is another home game this Saturday, January 20 when its hosts Allegheny College at 2 p.m.
