GAMBIER, Ohio –
Paige Matijasich recorded her first career double-double as the Kenyon Ladies basketball team led from start to finish Saturday afternoon in a 64-54 victory over Allegheny College. It was Kenyon's fourth straight win and it helped the team improve to 16-3 and 9-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
Despite its lowest shooting total in the last 11 games (33.3%), Kenyon got things done at the free throw line connecting on 13-of-15 (86.7%), its second-best mark of the year.
Matijasich paved the way for Kenyon scoring 14 points and pulling in a career-high 11 rebounds. It was also her twelfth straight game scoring in double figures.
Fellow guard
Jessica Gerber added 13 points while freshman
Ellie Schaub made her first career start and added 10. Rounding out Kenyon's top scorers was
Griffin Tullis who registered 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
Within the game's first three minutes, the Ladies had scored a pair of layups by
Lane Davis and Schaub. That 4-0 advantage was later ballooned to a 14-2 lead after Matijasich scored at the 2:14 mark. In that time, the Gators were just 1-of-8 from the field and committed eight turnovers.
Leading 18-7 heading to the second, Kenyon extended its lead to as many as 13 points on three different occasions. Its last came at 4:19 as Matijasich scored a floater from the paint bringing the tally to 26-13.
The Gators got as close as eight points, 26-18, after Kaylah Pinkney scored a layup with less than three minutes left. However, the Ladies closed the half up 32-20 after
Sharon Hull hit her fourth shot with 15 ticks remaining.
In the third, the visitors never cracked Kenyon's double-digit lead. In fact, the Ladies extended their advantage to as many as 18 points (46-28) after Gerber found Matijasich for a three-ball with 5:32 left. After three, the NCAC's second-place team led 51-39.
Not until the waning moments of the game did the Gators pull within single digits. That occurred when Delaney Arbore sank two 3-pointers in the final 1:54 when the outcome was in hand.
By game's end, Kenyon had forced 19 turnovers which were converted into 13 points. The Ladies also had a 10-4 second-chance points advantage.
Next on the calendar for Kenyon is a trip to Denison University on January 24 at 7:30 p.m.
