Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords miss their mark against Little Giants

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - In Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) men's basketball matchup at Chadwick Court, the host Wabash College Little Giants got double-doubles from freshman guard Jack Davidson and sophomore forward Harrison Hallstrom while posting a 65-51 win over the Kenyon College Lords, who struggled with their long-distance shooting throughout the game.

Davidson, second in the NCAC in three-point percentage, went 3-for-7 from behind the arc on his way to 17 points along with 11 rebounds. Hallstrom snagged 12 rebounds, three of them on the offensive glass, and chipped in an efficient 11 points for his seventh double-double of the season. Freshman guard Connor Rotterman scored in double digits as well, tallying 13 for Wabash (9-10, 5-7 NCAC).

Senior guard Alexander Powell led the Lords with 11 points, nine of them in the second half. Classmates Phillip Crampton and Alex Laub contributed eight and six points, respectively, while sophomore Ben Stern added seven. Laub led the Lords in boards with five.

The trouble for Kenyon (6-13, 3-9 NCAC) was shooting accuracy, especially from three-point range. Overall, the Lords shot 30.4 percent (17-for-56) for the game and that included a season-worst 13.6 percent (3-for-22) from long distance.

A quick start from Wabash didn't help matters, either. Hallstrom made his presence known right away, recording two blocks on Kenyon's first possession. Davidson then drew first blood with a three-pointer at the other end. The Little Giants tacked on three more points before Crampton put the Lords on the board by splitting a pair of free throws.

The game stayed fairly close through the first ten minutes, although Wabash never gave up the lead. The Lords drew within one point at 12-11 after Stern converted a layup with 12:42 showing in the clock.

The Little Giants began to pick up momentum with a jumper from Parker Manges at 10:28. Hallstrom caught fire in Wabash's next two possessions, muscling his way to two offensive rebounds and four second-chance points. Another three-point shot from Davidson, assisted by Manges, gave Wabash its first double-digit lead at 26-16.

Kenyon continued to fight throughout the game, but never cut Wabash's lead to less than six points. Shooting woes may have struck hardest toward the end of the first half, when the Lords went 0-for-7 on three-point attempts over a nine-minute stretch.

Those struggles continued into the second half, in which the Lords shot 28.6 percent (8-for-28).

With two minutes remaining in the game, the Lords found themselves trailing by a game-high 17 points. Powell then scored five consecutive points with a three-pointer and then two free throws to put the score at 60-48. A minute later, however, Rotterman sank his own pair of free throws to ice the game for the Little Giants.

Saturday's loss was Kenyon's second to Wabash this season, after dropping a 70-57 game to the Little Giants at home on December 9.

For their next game, the Lords travel to Wittenberg University (19-0, 12-0 NCAC), where tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
