Ladies rally to stop Fighting Scots

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College junior Mackenzie Bruzzio served up a couple of long runs, while senior Delaney Swanson amassed 23 kills Thursday to help lift the Ladies volleyball team to a 3-1 home win against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots. The Ladies dropped the first set, 25-23, but bounced back to take the next three by counts of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-18.

Swanson's 23 kills were two shy of her season-high. They also gave her a total of 1,166 kills for her career. That ties her with Cori Arnold '03 for fourth place among Kenyon's all-time kill leaders.

In addition to Swanson's output, which also included 11 digs and three blocks, Kenyon got a dozen kills and a .391 attack percentage from junior Maleah Miller. Bruzzio chipped in with 11 more kills, 10 digs and a five service aces.

Kenyon (14-7, 4-2 NCAC) got behind 8-3 at the start of the first set, but regrouped to pull within one point. Wooster, however, maintained the lead until Kenyon caught up at 16-16 and later moved ahead 22-20 off a kill from Miller. Down the stretch, the Fighting Scots scored three straight and five of the set's last six points to steal a 1-0 lead.

The second set started exactly the same way. Wooster (13-9, 2-4 NCAC) raced out to an 8-3 lead again, only to have Kenyon pull within one point after an ace from Bruzzio. This time, Kenyon's momentum didn't get cut short. With Bruzzio serving, the Ladies whipped up eight straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Fighting Scots eventually rallied, but a kill from Miller followed by two more from Swanson sealed the set win for Kenyon.

In the third set, the Ladies found themselves in a 21-16 hole. Bruzzio then threw down a kill and took over serving duties, which resulted in five straight points and a 22-21 Kenyon lead. Again, Miller and Swanson closed out the set with a combined three kills, giving Kenyon a 2-1 set advantage.

In the fourth, Kenyon again gave up an early lead, but came back strong to put things away. Trailing 8-7, the Ladies scored five straight points, including three consecutive kills from Buzzio. The Ladies then scored six of the next eight points to take a commanding 18-11 advantage before finishing things off.

Along the back row, Kenyon got 17 digs from senior Alexi Donnelly and another 15 from freshman libero Katie Howard. Sophomore Meghan Cason posted 42 assists and classmate Elyse Davidson came up with seven blocks.

Next up for Kenyon is Saturday's home tri-match. The Ladies will take on Hiram College at 1 p.m. and then face Mount Vernon Nazarene University at 5 p.m.
