OBERLIN, Ohio – The high-powered offense of the No. 16-ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team was on full display Wednesday night at Oberlin College. The Lords, aiming for their fourth consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference title, slapped a 7-2 defeat on the host Yeomen, a team they have now beaten eight straight times.
Kenyon came into the contest averaging 3.07 goals per game, a mark that ranked 18th best among all NCAA Division III teams. With seven goals Wednesday, that average jumped to 3.31 goals per game.
Senior
David Anderson set the tone early, scoring his team-high ninth goal of the season just 50 second from the start. The next 12 minutes featured two goals from fellow senior
Brice Koval, who first scored on a penalty kick and then scored off assists from Anderson and junior
Philippe Stengel.
Before the half, freshman
Finn Trondson and sophomore
Jack Cohen scored to give Kenyon a 5-0 lead. Trondson's goal was the first of his collegiate career and was assisted by senior
Will Bennett. Freshman
Tomas Munoz Reyes set up Cohen, who tallied his first goal of the season.
Bennett then registered both of the Lords' second-half scores. He got an assist from Cohen on the first goal and then one from
Scott Upton on the second. The goals were Bennett's fifth and sixth of the season.
Kenyon (13-1-2) was not only overpowering, but also efficient. The Lords took 15 shots. Nine of those shots were on goal and seven of them found the Oberlin net. Meanwhile, the Yeomen (1-15-0) scored twice on six shots.
With one game left in the regular season, the Lords sit atop the NCAC with a 7-0-1 record and 22 points. Ohio Wesleyan University sits second with a 6-0-2 record and 20 points. Kenyon's next game will by Saturday at home against Allegheny College, while Ohio Wesleyan will be at home against Denison University.
The top four teams in the final conference standings make the NCAC Tournament. The top seeded-team gains home-field advantage throughout.
