WOOSTER, Ohio – In three games this season, The College of Wooster sophomore Sydney Schuster scored four times against the Kenyon College field hockey team. The last of those four goals occurred Wednesday afternoon and gave the host Fighting Scots a 2-1 overtime win against the Ladies in the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament.
Kenyon, which entered the four-team tournament as the No. 3 seed, ends its season with a final record of 9-9. Wooster, the No. 2 seed and winners of both regular-season battles with Kenyon, moves to 15-5 overall and advances to Saturday's NCAC final at No. 1-seeded Denison University, which won the other NCAC semifinal game 3-0 against No. 4 seed Wittenberg University.
Kenyon battled Wooster stride-for-stride not only in Wednesday's game, but throughout the two regular-season match-ups, as well. In September at Wooster, the Ladies dragged the Fighting Scots into double overtime and then a shootout, in which Wooster prevailed. Last week in Gambier, Wooster held on for a slim 2-1 win.
Eight of Kenyon's nine losses this season came by one goal and five of those occurred in overtime.
Wednesday, Wooster struck first. Working off an assist from Caitlyn O'Conner, senior Maeven Berry got an uncontested shot right in front of the Kenyon cage to put the Fighting Scots up 1-0 at the 20:14 mark of the first half.
Three minutes later, it was Kenyon's turn. Freshman
Emma Hyer let a shot go that was saved by Wooster goalkeeper Katie Shideler. The rebound, however, bounced back out to sophomore
Paulina Mendez who fired in her first goal of the season.
Kenyon outshot Wooster 9-2 in the first half and then both defenses clamped down in the second. Wooster managed five more shots, while Kenyon registered three in the scoreless period.
When the game moved to overtime, Kenyon sophomore
Tara Shetty worked herself into a one-on-one situation, but her shot was denied by Shideler, who kept Wooster alive with a total of 10 saves.
Ninety seconds later, Wooster got its own one-on-one. An O'Connor pass put Schuster in position and she beat Kenyon goalkeeper
Suzy Deems, who finished the game with a pair of saves. The goal was Schuster's NCAC-leading 21st of the season.
