Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Kenyon offense overwhelms Oberlin

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team scored within the first three minutes of Saturday's game and never let up from there. The Ladies' offense peppered the Oberlin College defense with 34 shots while rolling to a 4-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Yeowomen.

The victory snapped a brief two-game skid for Kenyon, which upped its overall record to 6-5 and its conference mark to 5-3. The victory was also Kenyon's 12th straight over Oberlin, which has now lost 11 in a row and saw its records plummet to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in the NCAC.

Sophomore Gigi Guenther spearheaded the Kenyon attack. She got things going at the 2:14 mark of the first half. Classmate Tara Shetty set up Guenther with a pass from the right side of the Oberlin cage. Guenther collected it and fired it over the line for her fourth goal of the season.

About 20 minutes later, Guenther struck again. This time she worked alone, dodging an Oberlin defender and unleashing her shot from the middle of the zone. Prior to that tally, Kenyon's Molly Keen, another sophomore, put her name on the score sheet. Following a penalty corner and an assist from Claire McGinnis, Keen rifled her third goal of the season past Oberlin goalkeeper Kennedy Kline.

Kenyon outshot the Yeowomen 22-0 in the first half and got to the break with a healthy 3-0 lead.

Second-half play featured more of the same from the Ladies, who racked up another dozen shots and scored one more goal. That goal came from Shetty, who scored about six minutes into the half. The assist came from Guenther, who crossed a pass from the right side. The pass found Shetty at the left post, where she punched it home and finalized all scoring.

The goals were Guenther's fourth and fifth of the season, while Shetty's goal was her fourth. Saturday's output gave both Guenther and Shetty a dozen points on the season.

Kenyon freshman goalkeeper Suzy Deems didn't have to face any shots to record her second career shutout. The shutout was also the Ladies' fourth of the campaign.
