DELAWARE, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Ian Robertson caught 10 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, but the Lords football team couldn't generate much more than that Saturday at Selby Stadium. The Lords turned the ball over six times and gift-wrapped a 49-7 win for the host Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.
Ohio Wesleyan (2-3, 2-2 NCAC) benefitted from three of those turnovers in the first quarter and raced out to a 28-0 lead. After the Battling Bishops scored on the game's first possession, Kenyon forked over the ball on its first three possessions.
Two
Thomas Merkle interceptions and a fumble, all in Kenyon territory, resulted in three more scores for Ohio Wesleyan. Sterling O'Hara had the first interception for the Battling Bishops. Kor'Darius Melton then took care of the rest himself. He had the fumble recovery and returned it eight yards for a touchdown. He also had the next interception, returning it 27 yards for another score.
Before the first quarter could come to a close, Kenyon recorded its lone touchdown, as a nine-play, 75-yard drive came to an end with a 28-yard scoring strike from Merkle to Robertson. It was Merkle's sixth touchdown toss of the season and Robertson's second touchdown catch of the season.
Ohio Wesleyan scored twice more before the half. The first of those two second-quarter scores came on a Natrone Barnes' 41-yard interception return. The second was a Deji Adebiyi seven-yard pass reception from quarterback Jax Harville.
With a big 42-7 lead at the break, Ohio Wesleyan scored just once more and let its defense carry the bulk of the workload the rest of the way. Harville and Adebiyi hooked up one more time in the third quarter for that final score. Harville finished 15-of-26 for 156 yards and three touchdowns, while Adebiyi had five catches for 42 yards and all three of those touchdown catches.
On the ground, the Battling Bishops had 139 yards, 99 of which came from Martin Sesma. Ohio Wesleyan ended the game with just 288 yards of offense, but also with 35 points off Kenyon turnovers.
In addition to Robertson's offensive output, Kenyon saw Merkle go 28-of-41 for 237 yards.
The Lords' ground game was not effective.
Rob Meagher rushed for 37 yards on 11 carries and
Jimmy Andrews had 30 yards on seven carries, but the other Kenyon backs combined to lose 65 yards, giving Kenyon a net of two rushing yards on 27 attempts.
Kenyon (0-5, 0-4 NCAC) will give it another go next Saturday. The Lords stay on the road, where they will battle against the Hiram College Terriers (1-4, 0-4 NCAC) beginning at 1 p.m.
