Denison spoils Ladies’ Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio – Denison University (6-10, 1-3 NCAC) held Kenyon College to its second-lowest attack percentage of the season on Saturday as the Big Red snapped a six-match losing streak and won in four sets. The Ladies fell to 12-6 and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. For Denison, it was its seventh straight win in the regular-season series against Kenyon.

First-set action was extremely competitive with eight ties and six lead changes. Three consecutive points by the Ladies, all Denison errors, had the home team up 19-18. The Big Red responded scoring six of the next seven points, including two kills by Isabella Pivec. That helped the visitors eventually prevail 25-20.

In the second, Kenyon appeared to start pulling away as a 3-0 run pushed the Ladies up 17-13. However, Denison followed by hitting a 7-2 run and reclaiming the lead, 20-19, after a kill from Olivia Burnside. Kenyon had one more lead, 22-21, but the visitors closed strong again scoring the next four points.

Down 2-0, the Ladies fought back to win set three. After a Mackenzie Bruzzio kill brought that tally to 7-5, Kenyon hit a 7-3 stretch to go up six, 14-8. Delaney Swanson and Haley Witschey tallied kills during the run. The Big Red pulled the score to four points, 20-16, after a Kaila Kasper kill, but never any closer as the Ladies claimed a 25-19 victory.

Finally, in the fourth, the Big Red closed out the match. Leading 11-9, the visitors scored five straight points and took a 16-9 lead after an Alex Tubbs service ace. Kenyon was unable to pull any closer than five points the rest of the way.

The Ladies will return to action on October 10 at 7 p.m. when Ohio Wesleyan University pays a visit to Tomsich Arena.
