Ladies claim Damon’s/Hampton Inn Tip-Off title

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies (3-0) led from start to finish in a 65-57 win against Wilmington College on Sunday at Hermann Court. Paige Matijasich was named the tournament MVP while Lane Davis also made the all-tourney squad.

Senior Jessica Gerber led four Ladies in double-figure scoring as she tied for the game-high with 14 points. Matijasich added 12 points and nine rebounds while Grace Connery came off the bench to contribute 11. For Davis, she scored 10 and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Kenyon led throughout the first half while holding the hosts to just 23 percent shooting. In the first, the Ladies got out to a 4-0 lead before extending it to a 16-9 advantage with 29 seconds left after a Davis layup.

Then in the second, a three-ball from Gerber pushed Kenyon ahead by double digits, 24-14, almost halfway through the period. Amanda Carroll followed a bit later with a jumper and moved the advantage to 28-15. By halftime, Kenyon led 34-23.

The Quakers didn't threaten Kenyon's lead in the third, as the closest they got was nine points on three occasions. The fourth quarter, however, was a different story.

Down 53-45, Wilmington hit an 8-2 run capped off by a Michele Lee layup to bring the deficit to two, 55-53.  On its next possession, the home team missed a three-pointer from Savannah Hooper which allowed the Ladies to stay in front.

After that, Connery came up with a clutch three-ball for Kenyon. A missed shot was rebounded by Matijasich who kicked it out to the newcomer. Her shot from the right wing swished through and moved the Ladies ahead 58-53. Wilmington never got within a bucket after that.

The Ladies will look to remain unbeaten when they return home on November 20 to face Muskingum University (0-3) at 6 p.m.
