Lords come up short against Westminster

GAMBIER, Ohio – Powered by 29 points from Dylan O'Hara, Westminster College (Pa.) held off Kenyon College a few times in the second half en route to a 67-56 victory inside Tomsich Arena on Monday night.

The Lords' offense struggled mightily within the game's first nine minutes as it shot 2-for-16 and fell behind 14-4. Austin Armwood had Westminster's hot hand in that span as he tallied seven of those 14 points.

After the slow beginning, Kenyon (0-5) did find some offensive rhythm courtesy of Elijah Davis. His three-pointer at the 4:55 mark moved the deficit to 19-13 and he later scored a jumper to bring the tally to 21-16. The Titans responded, though, to take a 32-20 halftime lead as they closed the final 3:37 with an 11-4 stretch.

In the first, Kenyon shot 24.2 percent from the field and 10.5 percent from three. Both of those marks were season-low totals for a first half.

Following intermission, the Lords got into gear and pulled the double-digit deficit to six, 36-30. Kenyon hit its first five shots with its last coming to Matt Shifrin at the 17:06 mark. A couple sequences later, Shifrin buried a three-pointer to inch the Lords closer, 40-35.

Westminster kept the Lords at bay after that, and later extended its lead to nine, 50-42, following a jumper from O'Hara at 11:46. The Lords were able to make one more push to break the Titans' lead.

Ryan O'Neil scored in the paint with just under 8:30 remaining to move the visitor's lead to 55-52. Kenyon missed a chance to tie it on its next possession after a missed three-ball but did pull to within three again (57-54) at 5:46 following Carter Powell's layup.

Then, two free throws from Shifrin at 4:06 brought the tally again to three, 59-56. Kenyon's comeback efforts fell short after that, though, as the team did not score after those free throws.

Shifrin and Davis led the Lords with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Powell added eight points and nine boards while O'Neil chipped in with nine points.

Kenyon will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts The College of Wooster for an NCAC contest at 8 p.m.
