GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Chase Andries and Andy Hunt spearheaded a DePauw University passing attack that rang up 315 yards and four touchdowns during the Tigers' 38-6 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Kenyon College Lords.
Trying to counter those numbers, Kenyon quarterback
Thomas Merkle went 28-of-46 for 288 yards, while receiver
Ian Robertson hauled in ten passes for 164 yards. The two connected on Kenyon's lone scoring play of the game, a 48-yard, third-quarter touchdown toss.
With one game left on the schedule, Merkle has amassed 2,300 passing yards to go along with 11 touchdowns this season. Robertson has 94 receptions for 1,120 yards and five touchdowns. As they stand now, Merkle's yardage total ranks seventh-best in Kenyon's single-season record book, while Robertson's ranks sixth-best among receivers.
Merkle's other top targets on Saturday were
Daniel Russell, who grabbed six passes for 63 yards, and
Justin Bosch, who had seven catches for 34 yards.
While Kenyon's passing game covered 288 yards, the running game managed just five yards on 24 carries. On the other side of the line, DePauw's 315 passing yards were complemented by 123 rushing yards.
The Tigers opened play with 10 first-quarter points. Those points were tallied on a 20-yard field goal from Jake Tanner and a 28-yard pass from Andries to Hunt, who finished the contest with nine catches for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
In the second quarter, DePauw chalked up 14 more points to take a 24-0 lead into halftime. Those two scores came on 38-yard pass from Andries to Will Harris followed by a 39-yard pass from Matt Labus to Jackson Hamersly.
DePauw's final two scores both occurred in the third quarter. The first of those two was another Andries to Hunt connection for six yards and then a three-yard touchdown run from James Deaton.
With the victory, DePauw moved to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in NCAC play. Kenyon slid to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
The Lords' schedule has one more game left to be played, a home contest next Saturday against Denison University.
