OBERLIN, Ohio – Oberlin College (3-3, 2-1 NCAC) shot a scorching 68.9 percent in the first half en route to an 84-69 North Coast Athletic Conference victory against Kenyon College (0-8, 0-3 NCAC) on Wednesday night at Philips Gymnasium.
Freshman
Elijah Davis led Kenyon with a season-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting which included a 5-for-9 clip from three-point range.
Matt Shifrin added 13 while
Ryan O'Neil chipped in with 12. Additionally,
Carter Powell,
Alex Cate and
Konrad Christian each tallied a half-dozen points.
The Lords got out to a 6-2 lead after three-pointers from O'Neil and Davis. A couple minutes later, Shifrin buried another from beyond the arc pushing Kenyon's lead to 10-9.
That good start fizzled, though, and Oberlin got in gear. From the 16:39 mark to 12:59, Kenyon went just 1-of-6 while the Yeomen hit all six of their attempts which included four three-pointers. That 17-2 stretch, which included nine points from Eli Silverman-Lloyd, the game's high scorer with 24, pushed the home team up, 26-12.
Kenyon broke the double-digit lead twice, on a three-pointer from Shifrin (37-28) and a free throw from Cate (39-30), but by the end of the half, Oberlin had attained a 49-36 advantage.
The Yeomen's offense was superb as they hit 20 of their 29 shots in the opening half and hit 7-of-11 from downtown, a 63.6 percent mark.
While Oberlin's shooting settled down in the second half, the Lords were never able to pull the game within single digits.
About 5:30 minutes after halftime, Davis sank a jumper to bring the tally to 58-48. Then at 5:07, Davis drilled another three to move the scoreboard to 75-65. Those makes represented the closest Kenyon got to Oberlin's lead.
The Lords will try to snap out of their slowest start since 2002-03 when they travel to Denison University on December 8 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
