SPRINGFIELD, Ohio –
Grace Connery scored a season-high 15 points, all on three-pointers, to lead the Kenyon Ladies to a 70-67 North Coast Athletic Conference victory against Wittenberg University on Saturday at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
After getting down by 12 points in the first quarter, the Ladies turned to their three-point shooting and it payed off. Kenyon attempted 33 shots from downtown, the fourth-highest total in single-game history, and connected on 12 of them.
Paige Matijasich added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists while
Jessica Gerber tallied 12 points and four dimes. Additionally,
Lane Davis contributed nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and two steals.
About three minutes in,
Sharon Hull's baseline jumper moved the scoreboard to 6-5, Tigers. Following that make, the Ladies dug themselves into a hole. From the 7:04 mark to 1:44, Kenyon turned the ball over three times and missed all five of its attempts. Wittenberg used that to score 11 in a row and take a 17-5 lead after free throws from Abigail Crum.
Heading into the second down 19-11, the Ladies found much better offensive rhythm and rallied to take a halftime lead. The Tigers held a 27-20 advantage, however, the Ladies closed the final 5:54 with a 12-3 run. Matijasich scored four of those points while Davis tallied five.
In the third, the Ladies held their lead minus one instance, a Delaney Williams layup that pushed the home team up 41-40 at the 6:50 mark. That prompted a 12-2 run for Kenyon which was capped off by a
Kiele Anderson three-ball from the right wing. By the end of the period, the Ladies led 55-47.
Midway through the fourth, the Ladies held a 66-56 lead after
Bridget Molnar's layup along the right side. However, Kenyon would struggle the rest of the way scoring just four more.
In that time, an Alex Kiess three-pointer with 37 seconds left moved the tally to 68-65. After a Ladies turnover, Kiess scored again, bringing the deficit to one, 68-67. The Tigers fouled Matijasich on the inbound with seven seconds left, and after the Ladies' junior sank both free throws, the home team had one more chance. The ball was quickly moved ahead and it came to an open Kiess, however, her shot from the left wing rimmed out and allowed Kenyon to prevail.
Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home game against Case Western Reserve University on Monday at 7 p.m.
