Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

New-look Ladies win season opener

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Some of the faces are the same, but the style of play is not. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jess Fugate, the 2018 Kenyon College women's lacrosse team unveiled a high-powered offense that set the tone in Tuesday evening's 19-6 season-opening victory at Otterbein University.

Ten different players tallied at least one goal in the Ladies' win. Junior Cassie Hudson-Heck led the way five goals, while senior Kat Englert fired in four. Both Lucy Somers and Maggie Grabowski scored twice. Englert's four goals gave her 180 for her career. That total ranks third all-time at Kenyon and is just 17 goals shy of tying Cary Loomis '94 for the College's career record (197).

Kenyon, a team that averaged 11.38 goals per game last season, rolled to a 13-2 lead at halftime. Englert scored all four of her goals in the first half, while Hudson-Heck had three before the break. Englert also assisted on a pair of first-half goals, giving her 46 career assists, one shy of tying Kaley Bell '06 and Jane Symmes '08 for third all-time at Kenyon.

The Ladies didn't hold anything back in the game's opening minutes. They blitzed Otterbein with nine goals in a 17-minute span. It wasn't until the 9:09 mark that the host Cardinals finally got on the board. Kenyon's opening run included three goals from Hudson-Heck, as well as two goals each from Grabowksi and Englert.

In the second half, the Ladies took their foot off the gas a bit, but still managed to increase their lead to as many as 13 points before Otterbein scored the final two goals of the game.

The comfortable leads allowed Fugate to get playing time for 21 different Kenyon players, including both goalkeepers, Allie Dumas and Carina Barnes. Dumas, a senior, drew the start and earned the win after playing about 32 minutes and making four saves. Barnes, a junior, finished off the last 28 minutes and made three saves. Both keepers allowed three goals.

Throughout the game, Kenyon was highly efficient. The Ladies took 29 shots, 24 were on goal and 19 of those found the back of the net. On the flip side, Otterbein managed 17 shots with 13 on goal.

The win was the tenth season-opening victory in the last 11 years for the Ladies, who will next travel to John Carroll University to take on the Blue Streaks at 1 p.m. Saturday.
