Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Oberlin upends Kenyon, gains season split

GAMBIER, Ohio – A mid-game Oberlin College run, one that started before halftime and carried over to second-half play, was enough to power the visiting Yeomen to a 78-63 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Kenyon College men's basketball team Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena.

Oberlin (10-12, 4-11 NCAC) and Kenyon (6-16, 3-12 NCAC) played evenly the first 12 minutes, but the Yeomen created separation over those last eight minutes of the half.  Back-to-back layups by Christian Fioretti and Nile Godfrey gave Oberlin a 27-21 edge with about seven minutes remaining before the break.

The Lords sank a free throw to clip a point off their deficit, but the Yeomen finished off the half on a 9-2 run to take a 36-24 lead into the locker room. Andrew Campbell and Joshua Friedkin accounted for all nine of those Oberlin points during the spurt.

The Yeomen made just two of their first 10 three-point attempts, so they concentrated their efforts down low. During the first half, 24 of Oberlin's 36 points were registered in the paint. For the game, 52 Yeomen points were scored at close range.

Meanwhile, the Lords struggled to find their shooting touch. They were 10-for-31 (32.3 percent) in the first half and, like the Yeomen, started 2-for-10 from long range. Junior guard Matt Shifrin seemed immune to the misfires, however, and knocked down four of his first five shots for a quick 10 points.

Early in the second half, Oberlin continued to dominant front-court play. The Yeomen outscored Kenyon 19-6 with 14 of those points scored on layups. With 7:37 left, the Oberlin lead maxed out at 28 points (63-35).

To their credit, the Lords played tough down the stretch. Kenyon outscored Oberlin 25-15 over those final seven minutes. Shifrin accounted for nine of those 25 points and finished with a game-high 21. Ugnius Zilinskas added 10. Will Sigl had eight points and four rebounds, while Carter Powell contributed five points and eight rebounds.

Kenyon shot much better in the second half, firing at a 47.1 percent clip (16-for-34), but a season-high 19 turnovers led to 23 points for the Yeomen, who salvaged a season split with the Lords.

Fioretti ended up with a team-high 14 points and six assists for Oberlin. Campbell finished with 13 points, while Friedkin and Ben Rosow chipped in nine apiece.
