Ladies cap trip with two more wins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – One of the most successful spring break trips in program history came to a conclusion Monday after the Kenyon College softball team defeated Swarthmore College, 6-3, and then shut down The College of Brockport, 6-0. The wins improved the Ladies' overall record to 12-4.

Sophomore Keely Sweet and freshman Jace Juliano continued the team's pitching success. Sweet took the ball for game one against Swarthmore and went the distance, giving up just two earned runs on six hits and two walks. Juliano started game two and recorded Kenyon's fifth shutout of the trip. She tossed all seven innings, gave up eight hits and walked four. Both Kenyon pitchers had two strikeouts as they helped lower the team's earned run average to 2.01.

Against Swarthmore, the Kenyon women needed a dramatic finish to secure the win. Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Ladies loaded the bases with two outs. Senior Madi Maldonado then stepped to the plate and cranked a three-run double. Maldonado later stole third base and came around to score the game's final run on a passed ball.

Batting in the leadoff spot, Maldonado went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. In game two against Brockport, she tacked on one more hit and one more RBI. Maldonado, who earlier set the Kenyon career record for runs scored, now ranks third all-time in program history with 172 career hits.

The only other Kenyon batters to get a hit against Swarthmore were Lauren Graf and Nicole Horita. Grace Pilz, Amanda Coyle, Sweet and Horita also scored once in the game, while Emily Buckwalter tacked on an RBI groundout in the first inning to get the Ladies started.

Kenyon scored those six runs on just five hits against Swarthmore and things went pretty much the same way against Brockport as the Ladies tallied six more runs on seven hits.

In the bottom of the third inning of game two, a Grace Finn double scored Coyle for the Ladies' first run. Later in the inning, Finn would come around to score on a Brockport error.

Three innings after that, the Ladies scored four more times. Graf and Sweet singled to start things out. Pilz then drew a walk and Coyle tagged a triple to right center that cleared the bases ahead of her. One batter later, Maldonado plated Coyle on a bunt single.

Sweet ended up going 2-for-3 at the plate in that second game. Maldonado, Finn, Graf, Pilz and Coyle all had one hit for the Ladies, who are batting .335 as a team.

Once the Ladies get back to campus they'll start preparing for their next games, a Saturday non-conference doubleheader at Otterbein University.
