FORT PIERCE. Fla. – Kenyon College (3-6) pitchers
Patrick Craig and
Patrick O'Leary had virtually identical stat lines on Tuesday as the Lords swept a doubleheader against Albright College (4-2) at Gladwin Sports Complex. Both contests went seven innings and Kenyon won by scores of 4-1 and 5-1 to improve to 3-6.
GAME ONE
Craig tossed a complete game, scattered four hits, allowed just one earned run, two walks and fanned five as Kenyon kept the Lions' offense in check during the opener. He also induced 12 groundouts and three fly-outs.
It did not take long for the Lords to get the first run of the game.
Matt von Roemer singled, stole second base, and the throw from Albright's catcher resulted in an error which allowed
Mikey Arman to round home.
After the Lions tied things up in the third on an RBI groundout, the Lords came back in the fifth with three.
Reese Proctor's sacrifice bunt resulted in another Albright throwing miscue which allowed
Joaquin Murrieta and
Alec Manning to score. In the next at-bat, Arman delivered a single to right field that pushed Proctor across for Kenyon's fourth run.
Kenyon preserved the 4-1 lead as it turned a double play in the sixth and got a fielder's choice groundout at second to close the game in the seventh.
Arman led the way offensively going 3-for-4 while von Roemer added two hits.
GAME TWO
O'Leary followed up Craig's solid performance with another fine effort. The only statistical difference: O'Leary allowed one less walk.
Each team tallied a run in the first before Kenyon opened a three-run lead a couple frames later.
After O'Leary retired the Albright side in the top of the third, Kenyon's bats came up and moved the team in front for good.
With runners on first and third, von Roemer notched an infield single which scored Arman. Leading 2-1,
Matt Contreras dialed up a two-out, two-run double to left field. That connection allowed von Roemer and
Ryan Page to score.
The next two Kenyon innings didn't bring any runs, but in the sixth, the Lords found a 5-1 advantage as Arman drove home
Alex Hoskins with a single to left field.
For O'Leary, his performance from the second inning through the end was outstanding as he helped retired 18 of 22 Lions batters. Five of those outs were from strikeouts while nine more were fly-outs.
Tomorrow, Kenyon will look to extend its three-game winning streak with a 10 a.m. game against University of Scranton.
