Shaky defense costs Kenyon a doubleheader

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Trying to wrap up a two-week, spring-break schedule on a positive note, the Kenyon College baseball team struggled with defensive play Saturday and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Washington College Shoremen. The Lords committed seven errors on the day, lost game one, 10-3, and then fell, 3-0, in game two.

The defeats concluded a streaky trip for the Lords, who lost their first six games and then followed with six straight wins before being swept by Washington. The team returns to campus with a 6-8 overall record and will not play again until March 27, when it hosts Muskingum University.

In Saturday's first game, the Shoremen quickly timed up Kenyon starter Patrick Craig (1-1), who went four innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. One of those runs was unearned, as were the four runs given up by reliever Nathan Chandler in the fifth inning. The Kenyon defense, still trying to recover from multiple injuries, made four errors and yielded five unearned runs in game one.

On the other hand, the Kenyon offense also benefitted from a defensive lapse, scoring all three of its runs after a Washington error in the sixth inning. Matt Contreras started the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Trenton DiFilippo singled to left field and Alex Hoskins loaded up the bases, getting aboard via the Washington error. John Scandale then stepped in and grounded into a fielder's choice, which scored Contreras. Later in the inning, RBI singles from Paul Siciliano and Jake Brown plated DiFilippo and Scandale, respectively.

Overall, Kenyon had seven hits and six of them were singles. DiFilippo had the only Kenyon multi-hit game.

Washington starting pitcher Brian Kasey (3-0) earned the win after going five innings, striking out eight and giving up just two earned runs. At the plate, Ryan Zwier did most of the damage for the Shoremen. He went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

In game two, Kenyon committed three more errors. The first one led to an unearned Washington run in the first inning. The other two didn't affect the score.

In the fourth inning, however, Washington capitalized on a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a pair of wild pitches to score two more runs. The only hit of the inning was a two-run single from Chris Kramedas.

The mishaps strapped Patrick O'Leary (1-2) with the loss. He started the game for Kenyon, went four innings and gave up all three runs on just two hits, four walks and a hit batter. Alex Gow finished off the final three innings. He allowed just three hits and one walk while fanning five.

Matt Furlong (1-0) pitched five innings and got the win for the Shoremen, who are now 14-3. Sean Weiss tossed the final two innings to earn the save.

At the plate, Kenyon had six hits with doubles coming from Siciliano and Ryan Page. Like game one, DiFilippo was the only Kenyon batter with two hits. On the day, he was a combined 4-for-7 with a run scored.

The Lords got runners in scoring position in four different innings of game two, but left a total of seven stranded, including runners on third base in both the second and sixth innings.
