BEREA, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team made the most of its free-position shots Saturday and cruised to an 18-8 non-conference victory over the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. The win was Kenyon's fifth straight and improved the Ladies' overall record to 6-2. It was also Kenyon's third straight win by ten goals or more.
Sophomore
Avery Morgan set the tone early for Kenyon, scoring six times in the first half, including the Ladies' first three goals of the game. She staked Kenyon to early leads of 3-1 and 5-2. Half of her six first-half goals were scored on free-positions shots.
Throughout the game, Kenyon scored eight times on 18 free-position attempts. On the other side of the field, Baldwin Wallace scored just one free-position goal in a dozen attempts.
Kenyon juniors
Cassie Hudson-Heck and
Lucy Somers each added a pair of goals in the first half and helped the Ladies, who never trailed, to a 12-6 halftime lead. Those same two players tacked on two more goals apiece in the second half and both finished with four for the game.
Julia Mahoney,
Sarah Griswold,
Charley Myers and
Maggie Grabowski accounted for the rest of the Kenyon goals.
Grabowski not only scored once, but also posted team-high marks with eight ground balls and seven draw controls. Morgan added five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while
Annie Hesse contributed four ground balls and three more caused turnovers.
Hannah Stein scored three times for the Yellow Jackets, but all three came in the first half. Baldwin Wallace scored just twice in the second half and never got closer than six goals.
Kenyon ended up out-shooting Baldwin Wallace, 42-27, and senior goalkeeper
Allie Dumas ran her season record to 5-1 after making ten saves, including seven in the first half.
With eight games still showing on the schedule, the Ladies are now just one win shy of matching last year's win total. They'll try for that win next Saturday, when they host the Hiram College Terriers in what will be the North Coast Athletic Conference opening game for both teams.
