Ladies dominate Terriers in NCAC opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team continued its hot streak and picked up a North Coast Athletic Conference victory by defeating the Hiram College Terriers 21-2 on Saturday at McBride Field.

Kenyon (7-2, 1-0 NCAC), which has now equaled its win total from a year ago, won for the sixth straight game. Five of those wins have come by at least nine goals.

Cassie Hudson-Heck dominated play on both ends and set the tone for her teammates, scoring a game-high six goals. She also added an assist, a team-high five ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Three other players recorded hat tricks for the Ladies. Maggie Grabowski had three goals, a game-high five draw controls and an assist while Sarah Griswold had three goals and four draw controls. Lucy Somers recorded three goals and an assist as well.

Kenyon wasted no time getting the scoring started, as it recorded eight goals in the first 7:52 in the first half. The largest gap between any of the eight goals was just 1:49 on the game clock.

Three of the goals were scored by Hudson-Heck while Grabowski accounted for two. Charley Myers and Julia Mahoney each recorded two points in the first eight minutes as well. After picking up two assists, Mahoney got into the score column, tallying each of the next two goals for Kenyon. The second of Mahoney's goals came while the team was down two players due to penalties.

Despite the pace of the goals slowing down, Kenyon finished the first half with a 13-0 edge over Hiram. Kenyon outshot the Terriers 26 to 6, including a 19 to 3 edge in shots on goal. Kenyon's defense hounded Hiram, who could manage just five of their 12 clear attempts in the half.

The second half brought on more of the same, as Kenyon scored the first four goals of the half. Katelyn Slomovitz of Hiram finally broke through for the Terriers' first tally with 15:49 to play, ending Kenyon's 17 unanswered goals. The Ladies added on four more while the Terriers' leading goal scorer, Sierah Ray, scored the last goal with 1:15 to play, yielding the 21-2 final score.

Allie Dumas earned credit for the win behind three saves and 30 minutes in cage without allowing a goal. Carina Barnes made one save in relief for the Ladies in the second half.

Shots, draw controls, caused turnovers, ground balls, free-position shot attempts and turnover margin all worked toward the Ladies' favor.

Kenyon will have a week off before its next game. On March 31, they will travel to Delaware, Ohio and take on Ohio Wesleyan University at 1 p.m.
