Fast start helps OWU defeat Lords

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University (7-2, 2-0 NCAC) got out to a 9-1 lead after the first quarter and used that en route to a 21-10 victory against Kenyon College (6-3, 2-1 NCAC) on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game at Selby Stadium.
 
Steven Hildebrand and Max Tennant each scored six goals to lead the 15th-ranked team. As a unit, the Battling Bishops were 18-for-18 in clears, out-gained Kenyon 37-20 in ground balls and were 4-for-4 in extra-man opportunities.
 
For the Lords, senior Pierce Kraft notched a team-high three goals while Will Robbins and Sam Humphrey each scored two. Jonah Florence added a team-high two assists.
 
Tennant and Hildebrand scored the game's first two goals before Emilio Sosa got Kenyon on the board. With 10:17 left in the first, Sosa scored on a pass from Nick Vitale to bring the count to 2-1.
 
After that though, OWU pulled away. A 10-0 run which spanned from the 9:47 mark of the first to the 11:34 mark of the second put the home team up 12-1. Hildebrand tallied three of the goals while Will Anton and Justin Smith tallied goals in man-up situations.
 
Kenyon did close the second strongly as Kraft scored twice with Robbins adding another. By halftime, OWU led 14-4.
 
Third-quarter action saw the Battling Bishops extend their lead to as many as 13 on two occasions. Then in the fourth, Kenyon outscored OWU 4-3. Josh Galardi found Kraft for a man-up goal with 6:12 left. Following the Lords' seventh goal of the game, Humphrey scored twice while Matt Pollack added another.
 
The Lords will have a little break before their next game which comes April 3 at the College of Wooster.
