GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College (15-9, 1-1 NCAC) earned a 6-1 win against Oberlin College in the opener before the Yeowomen came back in game two and had their way with the Ladies' pitching in a 14-12 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.
GAME ONE
Lauren Graf went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in as the Ladies won 6-1. In fact, Graf provided all the run support Kenyon needed in the game.
After Oberlin was retired in order to start, Kenyon got a pair of base runners in
Madi Maldonado and
Grace Finn. Then in the fourth at-bat, Graf doubled to center field which scored both Ladies runners.
An inning later,
Grace Pilz went first pitch swinging and rocked a shot to deep left field pushing the lead to 3-0.
The score remained 3-0 after the third frame before Kenyon scored twice more an inning later. Maldonado doubled down the left field line which brought
Nicole Horita home. Kenyon's lead ballooned to 5-0 in the next plate appearance as Finn singled through the right side plating Maldonado.
Juliana Delsante added the Ladies' sixth run with a two-out single to right field which allowed Graf to score.
Four different Ladies recorded multiple hits while pitcher
Keely Sweet turned in a solid performance in the circle. She tossed all seven innings, allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five.
GAME TWO
The Yeowomen jumped ahead in the opening frame as Dana Rae Goldstein and Maddison Paladino each connected with two-run singles.
Despite the 4-0 deficit, Kenyon came right back in the home half of the frame and plated nine. After
Keely Sweet scored the Ladies' first run on an Oberlin error, Delsante smacked a bases-clearing double to right center which tied the game.
Amanda Coyle and
Emily Buckwalter also recorded run-scoring doubles a little later while two more runs came home after a wild pitch.
Oberlin added a run an inning later to bring the count to 9-5. However, the Ladies responded again to take a 12-5 lead. Coyle dialed up a two-run triple which brought home Pilz and Horita. That was Coyle's fourth three-bagger of the year which tied her with Annie Brobst and Kelly Adams for most in a single season. Maldonado then singled to the pitcher's circle plating Coyle for Kenyon's 12th run.
Despite a seven-run lead, the Ladies were not able to hold it nor add any more.
In the circle for Oberlin, Emily Tucci pitched the remaining five frames and allowed just five Kenyon players to get on base. She also fanned six.
Down 12-5, Oberlin secured four runs in the third. Goldstean and Sophia Musiak started with back-to-back doubles which cut the deficit to six. Then, Jackie Bednar plated two more with a double of her own down the left-field line. Emma Downing added Oberlin's final run with an RBI single.
After a couple scoreless innings, Oberlin tied the game in the sixth. Tucci smacked a solo home run and a while later, Paladino doubled to left center scoring the tying runs.
The seventh frame saw the Yeowomen retake the lead on a two-run homer over the left-field fence from Dani Pechthalt. Tucci then closed the game as she induced a double play to end the game.
Horita led Kenyon going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Coyle and Delsante each went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Additionally, Sweet recorded two hits.
Kenyon will hit the road for its next NCAC doubleheader. On April 4, the Ladies will play at Denison University (6-4, 1-1 NCAC) at 3:30 p.m.
