Ladies roll Panthers, but fall to Yellow Jackets

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kenyon College (5-1) cruised to a 10-2 win against University of Pittsburgh at Bradford before falling 3-2 to Waynesburg University on Monday morning.  That defeat ended the team's first five-game winning streak to start the season since 2014.

GAME ONE

A seven-run first inning sparked Kenyon to another shortened game as it defeated Pitt-Bradford 10-2 at CenturyLink Sports Complex.

Grace Finn and Juliana Delsante got things going for Kenyon with a pair of run-scoring hits. Then in the eighth at-bat, Nicole Horita's fly ball was dropped by the Panthers' first baseman allowing Lauren Graf and Britny Patterson to score.

Leading 4-0, the Ladies scored once more by error and two more on RBI hits from Amanda Coyle and Madi Maldonado.

Another dropped fly ball in the second allowed Patterson to score and that pushed Kenyon's lead to 8-0.

The Panthers were able to plate two in the home half of the second. A two-out triple to right-center by Kennedy Cratty plated Natalie Harding and Karissa Cratty bringing the count to 8-2.

Kenyon responded though, adding two more to its total. In the third, Coyle scored on a throwing error from Pitt-Bradford's catcher and Emily Buckwalter drove in Maldonado on a double to left-center.

In the fourth and fifth innings, Pitt-Bradford got a couple of runners in scoring position, however, Kenyon held. Jace Juliano helped secure the victory in the fifth, highlighted by a 12-pitch at-bat and strikeout of Lindsey Hull to close the game.

Maldonado went 3-for-4 to lead the team offensively while Buckwalter, Delsante and Coyle each tallied two hits. In the circle, Coyle moved to 2-0 tossing four innings, scattering five hits and inducing a combined 10 groundouts and flyouts.

GAME TWO

Waynesburg pitcher Courtney Messenger kept Kenyon's bats in check for the first time this season during the Yellow Jackets' 3-2 win. The Ladies mustered a season-low four hits and were forced into 13 groundouts and seven flyouts.

After a scoreless first frame, the Yellow Jackets got ahead 1-0. Alex Lawrence reached first after an error to start the inning. Three batters later, Ashley Dubovich made Kenyon pay for the mistake with an RBI single plating pinch runner Lindsey Stenger.

In the third, Marlee Ott was walked, and after a passed ball and pick-off play by the Ladies, she made it to third base. Cheyenne Wasko followed with an RBI single moving Waynesburg's lead to 2-0.

Down a pair, the Ladies rallied. Maldonado singled to start the fourth and was brought home on a two-bagger from Finn. Four batters later, Graf hit a two-out single which scored Buckwalter.

The 2-2 score remained until the sixth. Waynesburg connected on three straight singles with its last coming from Dubovich. Her hit brought pinch runner Keri Renzler home.

Trailing 3-2, the Ladies got a runner on base in the sixth and seventh frames; however, the Ladies' bats didn't come through.

Keely Sweet (3-1) did well in the circle as she tossed all seven innings, struck out five and allowed just one earned run.

Kenyon has tomorrow off but it will return to action on March 7 against Geneva College and Anna Maria College.
