FORT PIERCE, Fla. – La Roche College (5-1) rallied from a three-run deficit in the middle innings and later triumphed 11-10 over Kenyon College (0-3) on Tuesday night at Gladwin Sport Complex.
Kenyon's offense had it best showing of the early season as four players recorded multiple hits.
Junior
Matt Contreras highlighted those efforts. He went 5-for-5, became just the seventh player to reach that single-game total in program history, and was one off the single-game record of six set by
Matt von Roemer last year. Contreras also drove in four while freshman
Alex Gow had two hits and two RBI.
The Lords fell behind 5-0 after the first two frames with Redhawks catcher Joe Professo recording an RBI triple and single in the first and second innings, respectively.
In the third, Kenyon was able to cut the deficit to 5-4. Three of the first four batters recorded singles and Contreras' single through the right side plated
Eric DelRosso. After
Patrick O'Leary was hit in the batter's box, Gow followed with a two-run single to bring the count to 5-3.
Kenyon's fourth run was delivered off the bat of
Paul Siciliano who hit an infield single plating O'Leary.
That momentum carried over to the fourth for Kenyon. Contreras added another run-scoring hit while O'Leary connected on a sacrifice fly to center field which brought von Roemer home.
Max Warren capped off the scoring with another sac fly, this time scoring
Mikey Arman.
Leading 7-5, Kenyon gave up a run to La Roche in the home half of the fourth before scoring two more in the fifth. Arman connected with an RBI triple while Contreras tallied a one-run two-bagger.
Trailing 9-6, the Redhawks responded with a pair of runs in the fifth highlighted by Johnathan Melendez's two-out, run-scoring single which made the tally 9-8.
La Roche added two more runs, including one via error, in the sixth to retake the lead, 10-9.
In the seventh, Contreras brought the Lords back with a two-out homer to left field which tied the game at 10.
That was the final time Kenyon scored, though, as La Roche went back ahead in the bottom of the seventh. A dropped third strike on Gino Quahlie forced a throw to first and that allowed Melendez to score from third.
In the eighth and ninth frames, Kenyon was not able to get runners on base.
Tomorrow, the Lords will face Bridgewater State University (2-4) at 11:00 a.m.
