HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Kenyon College junior
Cassie Hudson-Heck scored six goals Wednesday and steered the Ladies lacrosse team to a 19-10 victory over the Morrisville State College Mustangs during a neutral-site contest at Hilton Head Preparatory.
Hudson-Heck scored the first goal of the game and tacked on two more in the first half to give Kenyon an 8-3 lead at the break. She fired in three more goals in the second half, needing a total of just nine shots to register a game-high six scores. She also managed four ground balls and a couple of caused turnovers against the Mustangs.
After Hudson-Heck's first goal, Morrisville State scored the equalizer about four minutes later. Kenyon then followed with goals from
Avery Morgan, another from Hudson-Heck and one from
Maggie Grabowski. That spurt gave Kenyon a 4-1 lead after ten minutes of play. It also was enough to keep the Ladies ahead for the rest of the game.
Morgan scored once more in the half.
Lucy Somers fired one in and Hudson-Heck tossed in her third to give the Ladies a five-goal cushion at halftime. Morrisville State never got any closer than that.
Kenyon tallied the first three goals of the second half to jump out to an 11-3 advantage. Late in the game, the Ladies' lead grew to nine goals twice and reached a 10-goal difference once, just after
Julia Mahoney scored with 7:30 left on the clock.
Both teams struggled with turnovers, but Kenyon made up for it by winning 24-of-30 draw controls and forcing the Mustangs into nine failed clear attempts. The Ladies also held a 43-24 advantage in shots.
Crooked numbers could be found up and down the Ladies' stat sheet. Grabowski racked up a dozen draw controls, scored three times and assisted on two other goals. She also had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Morgan ended up scoring four times. She also had one assist and claimed four draws, while Mahoney scored twice and dished out a game-high four assists. Additionally, Somers finished with two goals and two assists.
The win pumped Kenyon's overall record to 3-2 and the loss moved Morrisville State to 0-3. The Ladies will stay put for a couple of days and return to Hilton Head Preparatory on Friday to face Wentworth Institute of Technology, a team that fell to 0-2 after dropping a 21-4 decision to Wittenberg University.
