Midway spurt helps Dominican edge Lords

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Dominican University (Ill.) scored all of its runs between the third and sixth innings and eventually won 7-5 against Kenyon College (0-5) on Thursday at Gladwin Sports Complex.

The scoreboard read 0-0 after two frames before the Stars attained a 3-0 lead. In the third, Dominican got its first run after a sacrifice hit from Colin Janison turned into an error allowing one to score. In the next at-bat, Frankie Sessa smacked a two-run double to right center and extended the Stars' lead to 3-0.

After an RBI double from Matt Segovia in the fourth, the Stars moved their advantage to 6-0 in the fifth. Janison scored on a fielder's choice and Nathaniel Natividad added a run-scoring single.

Kenyon responded with three runs of its own in the home half of the inning. Alex Gow started with a double to left and a few batters later Joaquin Murrieta drove in Gow with a single to right. Trenton DiFilippo added the team's second run on a double-play by the Stars. The Lords inched closer as Matt von Roemer hit a two-out, run-scoring single plating Alex Hoskins.

Leading 6-3, the Stars added one more in the sixth as Sessa drove in Segovia with a two-out single to left field.

A four-run deficit prompted another Kenyon spurt in the seventh. With von Roemer and Eric DelRosso on second and third, respectively, Matt Contreras registered an RBI groundout to shortstop pulling the score to 7-4. Then, Patrick O'Leary dialed up another infield single which brought von Roemer home.

That turned out to be the final run for the Lords, though, as Dominican changed pitchers and retired the next seven Kenyon batters.

Mikey Arman, Gow and DiFilippo all tallied two hits for the Lords while Will Allen struck out four in defeat. Kenyon's bullpen was at its best this early season as Luke Calcei, Brad Clegg and Ross Scheinberg combined to toss 4.1 innings, fanned four batters and allowed just one run.

Kenyon will look to shake off its slow start tomorrow with a game against Drew University at 10:30 a.m.
