HIRAM, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team amassed 17 hits, survived three Hiram College come-backs and used the tenth inning to score a pair of runs that secured a wild 13-11 win over the host Terriers during a Wednesday afternoon conference contest at Fishel Field.
The victory moved Kenyon to 8-11 overall and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Hiram fell to 4-15 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The two teams were scheduled for a doubleheader, but game two was postponed due to the length of game one (3:50), as well as some inclement weather that included snow.
Through the first five innings, it appeared the Lords were in completed control. A four-run second inning was manufactured by RBI singles from sophomore
Paul Siciliano and senior
Mikey Arman. Freshman
Ryan Page then stepped in and doubled to left field, scoring Arman and Siciliano.
In the fourth inning, the Lords doubled their lead. Page stroked a single that scored Arman. Senior
Matt von Roemer drew a walk and junior
Matt Contreras blasted a three-run home run, his second long ball of the season and the fourth of his Kenyon career.
On the mound, freshman starter
Patrick Craig was feeling good about that 8-0 advantage. He ended up pitching into the sixth inning before Hiram did any damage. The Terriers got two runs off Craig before he exited. Prior to his departure, Craig gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out two.
Kenyon relievers did not have the same success as Craig. The Terriers tacked on six more runs to complete an eight-run sixth inning that knotted things up. Hiram had eight straight batters reach base in the inning.
Stunned, the Lords regained their composure, and the lead, in the top of the seventh inning.
Jake Brown, who took over for Page, smacked a two-out single to plate
Joaquin Murrieta. The Terriers, however, responded with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to tie things back up at 9-9.
In the eighth inning, both teams scored twice. Kenyon got one unearned run and also an RBI single from sophomore
Patrick O'Leary. Hiram scored its pair on a single and two doubles.
Neither team scored in the ninth inning. In the tenth, however, the Lords posted two more runs and, this time, got no answer from Hiram. Freshman
Alex Hoskins led off the extra inning by getting on base via a Hiram error. Two batters later, Murrieta singled and so did Siciliano. That loaded the bases for Arman, who ended up the beneficiary of another Hiram error, one that allowed two runs to score.
Arman finished the game 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI. Contreras and Siciliano were both 3-for-6. Contreras scored twice and had the three RBI from his homer, while Siciliano scored once and had an RBI. Page and Murrieta both finished 2-for-3.
Sophomore
Will Oakley, who pitched the ninth and tenth innings, earned the win and moved his record to 1-1. He faced seven batters, gave up one hit and struck out one.
The teams will be able to make up the postponed second game, but a date has yet to be determined.
