Ladies drop key NCAC battle at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Kenyon College junior Cassie Hudson-Heck scored four more goals Tuesday, but that total wasn't enough for the Ladies lacrosse team to overcome the Allegheny College Gators, who nearly doubled-up Kenyon in a 15-8 victory at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

As the regular season heads toward a conclusion, every game result is magnified in the scope of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. Kenyon (9-5, 3-3 NCAC) entered the game with sole possession of third place in the standings and left the game yielding that spot to the host Gators (7-6, 3-2 NCAC).

The Ladies have two conference games left, one at Oberlin College and one at home against DePauw University. They'll almost certainly need to win both in order to gain one of the four spots in the upcoming NCAC postseason tournament.

The Gators, winners in four of their last five games, took control early Tuesday. Emily Kraus scored the first two goals of the game and was followed by Shelby Piper and Brenna Lawler. That outburst, which spanned a little more than eight minutes, gave Allegheny a 4-0 lead.

It wasn't until the 17:28 mark that the Ladies finally cracked the Gators' defense. That's when Hudson-Heck scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Avery Morgan. That sparked a 4-0 run for the Ladies, who tied things up with another Hudson-Heck goal at the 7:26 mark. In between those two tallies, Sarah Griswold and Maggie Grabowski scored for Kenyon.

The rest of the half saw the Gators outscore the Ladies 3-1 to take a 7-5 lead into the break.

Morgan then scored the first goal of the second half and brought the Ladies within one. That, however, would be the end of any Kenyon momentum.

Allegheny scored the next four goals and seven of the game's next eight to take a commanding lead. The back-breaker for the Ladies came between the 7:49 mark and the 5:07 mark of the second half. That's when Allegheny's Maddie Olson scored three straight and moved the Gators' 11-7 advantage to 14-7.

Olson ended up matching Hudson-Heck's game-high four goals. She also had two assists for a game-high six points. Piper and Kraus both scored three times for the Gators, while Lawler finished with a pair.

Hudson-Heck's four goals gave her 49 on the season and 112 for her Kenyon career.
