GAMBIER, Ohio – In a battle of unbeaten conference foes, the Kenyon's women's lacrosse squad saw its seven-game win streak snapped at the hands of their rivals, the Denison University Big Red on Saturday. Denison (7-2, 2-0 NCAC) used a strong first-half finish to catapult themselves to victory, doubling up Kenyon (8-3, 2-1 NCAC) by a final count of 14-7.
The teams traded goals midway through the first half, eventually finding the score evened at 3-3 with
14:39 left. Kenyon, who tied the game on
Cassie Hudson-Heck's free position goal, went on to score the next two goals of the game as well.
Maggie Grabowski gave the Ladies the lead which was then followed by Hudson-Heck's second free position goal with
8:42 to play in the first.
Kenyon held on to its two-goal edge, but in the final five minutes of the half, the Big Red scored five unanswered goals, including three in the final minute of the half.
Denison's Kiely Noonan scored two goals that were 11 seconds apart during the stretch, which built a two-goal lead for her side. Leah Israel scored 28 seconds later, extending the Big Red's lead to three, 8-5, with
21 seconds remaining.
After the break,
Avery Morgan got the first goal of the second half, bringing Kenyon back to within two. Kenyon did not get any closer, however, as Denison scored three more before Kenyon's next from
Lucy Somers. The junior's 25th goal of the season brought the score to 11-7 with
14:52 left. Once again, though, the Kenyon goal was matched with three more from the visitors.
Overall, in the span lasting from
4:26 to play in the first half until Somers' goal in the second half, Denison outscored Kenyon 8 to 1 in about 20 minutes of game time.
Allie Dumas was the star of the day for Kenyon, tying her season-high with 13 saves in defeat.
Five different Ladies found the back of the net. Hudson-Heck scored a pair, bringing her total to 40 goals. Somers also had a multiple-goal effort with two. Morgan scored off a free position opportunity.
Sarah Griswold connected on the team's first goal, while
Maggie Grabowski added a goal to her team-high four draw controls.
Kenyon will travel to the College of Wooster for its next game on
Wednesday, April 11 with a 5:00 p.m. start.
