GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College sophomore
Samantha Hayes scored twice Friday, steering the Ladies soccer team to a season-opening 2-1 victory over the visiting Case Western Reserve University Spartans.
Hayes, who played 14 games and scored four goals as a freshman, tallied one goal in each half of Friday's contest. Her first goal, which crossed the goal line in the game's 22nd minute, was corralled and then put back from a loose ball off Lauren Metz, the Case goalkeeper. Her second goal occurred about 13 minutes into the second half. She got an assist from first-year
Maddie Davis and doubled the Ladies' total with a shot from the left side.
Hayes was active throughout the game, leading the Ladies with four shots. Overall, Case outshot Kenyon, 12-7, but
Jillian Countey, the Ladies goalkeeper, made six saves to keep Kenyon in front.
The Spartans did break through late in the game and avoided the shutout. With less than four minutes left on the clock, Christina Hickson was able to sneak one past Countey for the lone Case goal.
The season-opening win was the first in four season for the Ladies, who have the weekend off and will next host Adrian College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
