GAMBIER, Ohio – Sewanee scored the game's first 30 points en route to a 43-10 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at McBride Field. It was both team's season opener.
Each of the Tigers' first three drives resulted in field goals before their fourth possession concluded with a touchdown pass from Alex Darras during a six-play, 68-yard drive. By the end of the first, the visitors had out-gained the Lords 203 to 35 and were averaging nearly seven yards per play.
On the other side for Kenyon's offense, it found no rhythm as the Tigers did not allow a first down during the home squad's first three possessions. Additionally, Sewanee's Thomas Richardson recorded an interception that led to a Michael Jacobs field goal pushing the score to 6-0.
Down 16-0 heading to the second quarter, the Lords crossed into Sewanee territory after an 11-yard
Thomas Merkle scramble. On the ensuing play, though, the Tigers stopped
Rob Meagher on 4th-and-two giving the ball back to the Tigers' offense.
Kenyon got the ball right back a play later as
Taaj Davis came up with an interception at the Kenyon 30-yard line. That brief momentum did not translate, though, as the Lords went three and out on the next series.
The Tigers scored twice more in the second, on 80-yard and 32-yard touchdown drives. Then late in the quarter, Kenyon got its best drive of the half. Merkle completed 11 passes including a fourth-down conversion to
Matt Jolliffe as the drive ended with a 33-yard field goal from
Ryan Cooper.
Out of the halftime break, the Lords followed with their first touchdown-scoring drive of the season.
Justin Bosch caught a 15-yard pass on fourth down and three plays later, Jolliffe snagged a five-yard pass in the end zone to bring the count to 30-10.
That was Kenyon's final score of the game as the Tigers added 13 more points the rest of the quarter to complete the final tally.
By game's end, Sewanee had rushed for 174 yards and threw for 261, including 252 from Darras. On the ground, Warren Holland racked up 102 yards on 20 carries.
Merkle led Kenyon with 214 yards passing while Bosch pulled in 11 catches for 91 yards. Meagher notched a team-high 64 yards rushing. Defensively,
Sam Dickey led with 12 tackles while
Michael Picone registered 2.5 sacks.
Next week, Kenyon hosts Oberlin College at 1 p.m. for a North Coast Athletic Conference game.
