Ladies crush Crusaders, set new team record

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies volleyball team connected on .453 of their attacks against Capital University on Tuesday night, breaking the program's previous single-match record of .450 set on September 23, 1988 in a match against Heidelberg University.

Kenyon (7-1) attempted 75 attacks, and notched 37 kills with a mere three errors. Senior Delaney Swanson led the effort with a 13-kill, seven-dig performance. Additionally, Mackenzie Bruzzio, Elyse Davidson, Haley Witschey and Maleah Miller all contributed at least five kills.

Sophomore Meghan Cason dished out 30 assists and also served up four aces while Bruzzio and Alexi Donnelly collected seven and six digs, respectively.

Capital's Leighann Osborne recorded nine kills, however, as a team; the Crusaders struggled mightily hitting just .052.

In the opening set, Swanson's second kill moved the tally to 6-1 before a Miller kill pushed the Ladies up 11-5. A few sequences later, Kenyon hit a 6-0 stretch to reach its first double-digit lead, 17-7, following another Swanson point. The Ladies went onto win 25-13 as they hit .500 and held the visitors to a .000 attack percentage.

Set two saw the Ladies hit an early 11-2 run to bolster their lead to 12-3 after a Swanson service ace. The Crusaders pulled to within four (15-11) a little bit later after a bad set by Kenyon. However, that was the closest they got the rest of the way as the Ladies won 25-16. Kenyon continued its strong offensive play as it hit .435.

The final set saw Capital hold a couple of leads, including a 7-6 margin after a kill from Jessica Gavlak. It did not take long for Kenyon to get back in gear though as three straight points followed. The Crusaders came close to tying the set a couple times, with their last at 12-11, but the Ladies didn't allow it and eventually won 25-18.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a trip to Hiram, Ohio for a trio of non-conference matches starting on September 14 against Frostburg State University.
