GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomore
Claire McGinnis scored in the first overtime to lift the Kenyon College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory against DePauw University on Saturday during a North Coast Athletic Conference game at McBride Field.
The Ladies improved to 3-2 and 2-0 in conference play while the Tigers dropped to 0-4 and 0-2 in league action.
Before McGinnis' goal, the Ladies and Tigers battled back and forth until an extra session was needed. DePauw took the first lead a little more than seven minutes into the contest as Rose Revolinski drove up the middle, passed left and watched as Cathy Zesiger fired into the left corner.
Kenyon amped up its defense after that as DePauw attempted just one more shot on goal in the 23rd minute. With the Ladies defense keeping the contest at 1-0, the home squad's offense knotted things up with less than six minutes left in the half.
A DePauw defender blocked
Tara Shetty's initial shot, but the rebound came to newcomer
Emma Hyer who fired back into the cage. It was her first career goal.
Then in the second half, the Ladies went in front with 3:38 left on the clock. A pass from captain
Hannah Sklar deflected near
Sarah Metzmaier and the freshman forward shot underneath the legs of DePauw goalie Hannah Metzger.
Despite a 2-1 lead late in the game, Kenyon wasn't able to hold it as the Tigers scored on a shot from Kate Milner with 2:07 left.
When the two teams went to overtime, the Ladies closed the deal quickly. As Shetty drove down near the left end line, she passed back into the middle and the deflected ball came to McGinnis who scored her first goal of 2018.
Tomorrow, the Ladies will host Earlham College at noon for another conference match.
