GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomores
Tara Shetty and
Gigi Guenther accounted for all Kenyon College goals during the Ladies 4-1 win over the Earlham College Quakers in Sunday field hockey action at McBride Field.
Shetty got the scoring started in the game's 26th minute. After Earlham applied a bit of pressure in the Kenyon zone, the Ladies cleared the ball. Senior
Abbey Roswell ended up gaining possession on the right side and she launched a long lead pass to Shetty. Shetty beat her defender, caught up to the ball and got her shot to trickle through the legs of Earlham goalkeeper Margaret Murphy.
Kenyon, which outshot Earlham 10-5 in the first half and 18-10 for the game, went into the break clinging to the one-goal lead provided by Shetty.
It took just 125 seconds of play in the second half for Earlham to bring the game back to even. During a penalty corner, Maite Turlings gathered the inbound pass. She shuffled the ball to Sofia Salvatore, who gave the ball right back to Turlings. Turlings then loaded up and fired the lone Quakers goal into the left side of the Kenyon cage.
A little more than two minutes later, Kenyon regained the lead when Guenther collected a loose ball in the Earlham circle and fired it over the Quakers goal line. Late in the game, Guenther got her second score while standing on the doorstep of the Earlham cage. She tried three times to power the ball over the line. The first two were saved by Murphy, who was sprawled out near the left post. Once the second rebound came back out to Guenther, she was able work around Murphy and finish off the scoring play.
Prior to Guenther's second goal, Shetty scored her second on a simple penalty corner. Senior
Hannah Paterakis inserted the ball to Shetty, who was standing on the left side of the circle. Once the ball got to her, Shetty launched a bullet into the right side of the Earlham cage.
The two goals for Shetty were her first two of the season, as well as the fourth and fifth of her career. Guenther's were also the first two of the season and the third and fourth of her career.
The win was Kenyon's second in a row and improved the Ladies' records to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The loss dropped Earlham to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC.
