Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hayes’ overtime goal gives Ladies win at JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – A little more than two minutes into overtime at John Carroll University, Kenyon College sophomore Samantha Hayes netted the game-winning goal to give the Ladies soccer team a 1-0 victory over the host Blue Streaks.

The result kept Kenyon undefeated in its last four games and pushed the Ladies' overall record to 4-2-1. On the other hand, the Blue Streaks saw a two-game win streak halted and their record slip to 3-4-1.

When the teams couldn't settle the score in regulation, Hayes teamed up with freshman Olivia Dion to notch the win for Kenyon. Dion broke loose down the right side and cut in toward the goal. She centered a pass for Hayes who took her shot just a couple yards away from the goal line. John Carroll goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice stepped up to make the initial save, but the rebound came right back to Hayes who finished the play, recording her fourth goal of the season.

Back in the early stages of the game, John Carroll controlled first-half play, out-shooting Kenyon 14-4. Eight of those Blue Streaks shots were on goal, forcing Kenyon goalkeeper Jillian Countey to make save after save.

At the other end of the field, the Ladies' best scoring chances came off back-to-back corner kicks in the game's 27th minute. The first corner resulted in a header from Meredith Rogers, but her attempt was blocked by a John Carroll defender. The ensuing corner led to a shot on goal from Hayes, but DelGiudice was in position to make the save.

The shots evened out a bit in the second half with John Carroll holding a slim 8-7 advantage. From those totals, both teams had three shots on goal. Most of the pressure applied by Kenyon occurred in regulation's last 10 minutes. During that span, Kenyon managed one more corner and six shots. Despite being out-shot 22-13 for the game, Kenyon rode that late momentum into overtime to pull out the win.

Countey's 11 saves were a career, single-game high for the junior, who also notched her third shutout of the season and the 15th of her career.
