Ladies take two at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College volleyball team kicked off its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule Saturday with a three-set win against the host Gators of Allegheny College. Shortly afterward, the Ladies remained on the court to chalk up a five-set, non-conference win over the Chatham University Cougars.

The pair of victories snapped the Ladies' brief two game skid and brought their overall record to 11-3. Allegheny fell to 4-11 with the loss and Chatham slipped to 4-9.

In the first set of the day, Kenyon and Allegheny were tied 14-14. The Ladies scored five of the next six points and then scored six of the set's last seven points for a 25-18 win. Kenyon survived a late Gators' surge and took the second set 25-20. In the third, the teams were tied 17-17, but Kenyon whipped up an 8-1 run to cap off the match 25-18.

Junior Mackenzie Bruzzio logged a team-high 10 kills. Senior Delaney Swanson added nine kills, as well as a dozen digs and a team-best three aces.

The Ladies faced a lot more adversity during the second match of the day, as Chatham jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets 25-23, 25-19. In the third set, Chatham moved ahead 17-14. Kenyon, however, scored the next four points. Chatham then scored one to tie the set at 18, but Kenyon responded with six straight points, all via kills, four of which came from Bruzzio. Maleah Miller also had a kill in the run and later threw down one more to seal a Kenyon 25-19 win.

As they did for most of the day, the Ladies finished the fourth set with confidence, expanding a two-point lead with four straight scores for another 25-19 win.

The momentum carried over into the deciding set, as Kenyon opened leads of 4-1 and 10-5 before putting things away with a 15-7 victory.

Bruzzio again led the team, this time with 18 kills against the Cougars. Throughout both matches, she piled up 28 kills, 23 digs and two blocks.

Swanson followed with two-match totals that included 24 kills, 29 digs and four service aces. Swanson, who now has 1,045 career kills, broke the same milestone in career digs. With her current total of 1,004 digs, Swanson became just the fifth player in Kenyon history to amass more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She currently ranks fifth all-time at Kenyon in career kills and 13th all-time in career digs.

Kenyon's two Saturday matches also witnessed 21 kills from Haley Witschey, 85 assists from Meghan Cason and 44 digs from Katie Howard, who also posted eight service aces.
