Scots sink Ladies in shootout

WOOSTER, Ohio – Four first-half goals were not enough to decide the outcome of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey game at John P. Papp Stadium. Kenyon College and The College of Wooster had to settle things with a shootout, which the host Fighting Scots won, scoring three times on four attempts.

The 3-2 victory bumped Wooster's records to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC. The loss dropped Kenyon to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Ladies started the early scoring at the 10:42 mark of the first half. Sophomore Tara Shetty beat her defender down the field and fired in her shot past Wooster goalkeeper Katie Shideler. It was Shetty's third goal in the Ladies' last four games.

That Kenyon lead didn't last long, though. Fifty-four seconds after it was scored, Wooster tallied the neutralizer. With an assist from Erika Womack, Sydney Schuster deflected in the Fighting Scots' first goal past Kenyon freshman goalkeeper Suzy Deems.

The rapid fire scoring continued, as it took Kenyon just 54 more seconds to regain the lead. Freshman Sarah Metzmaier was credited with the Ladies' next goal, her team-leading seventh of the season.

A little more than 10 minutes later, Wooster answered again. This time it was Katie Agatucci who scored an unassisted goal that knotted the game at 2-2.

From that point on, Shideler, Deems and the defenses didn't allow anything else. Kenyon managed six shots in the second half and four in the two overtimes, while Wooster had three shots in the second half and four in the overtime periods.

When the shootout got underway, Shideler stepped up. The Wooster sophomore stopped the first three Kenyon attempts. Deems stopped the first Wooster attempt, but the next three Fighting Scots scored to seal the victory.
