Kenyon dismisses Denison in overtime

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Aidan Schoellkopf's goal six minutes into overtime lifted the Kenyon College men's soccer team to a 2-1 North Coast Athletic Conference road win Saturday afternoon at rival Denison University.

Kenyon senior Brice Koval fired the first shot of overtime, but had it blocked by a Denison defender. Neither team threatened for the next five minutes.

At the 6:08 mark of the extra session, Schoellkopf, a freshman, uncorked Kenyon's second overtime shot, which eventually bounced off Denison goalkeeper Dylan Brown. The rebound came right back to Schoellkopf, who then booted in the game-winner for his first collegiate goal.

Kenyon, currently ranked by the United Soccer Coaches as the No. 7 team in NCAA Division III, held the upper hand for most of the contest. The Lords outshot the Big Red 15-7 and posted a lopsided 6-0 margin in corner kicks. The Lords, however, played more than half the game a man down because of a red card issued late in the first half.

It took a little more than 47 minutes of play for the first goal to be scored. Returning to the field after halftime, Kenyon senior David Kim slotted a pass to Koval, who let loose from the top of the box and beat Brown. The goal was Koval's fourth of the season and the 19th of his Kenyon career.

Denison evened things up in the game's 82nd minute. With Kenyon goalkeeper Ian McInturf out of position, the Big Red pounced and produced a goal from Adrian Miller.

The victory for Kenyon was its sixth straight against Denison and was Kenyon's 18th straight NCAC regular-season win. The Lords are now 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the NCAC, while Denison slid to 2-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.
