GAMBIER, Ohio – Shenandoah University got a late first-half goal then followed in the second stanza with a strong defensive effort to defeat Kenyon College 1-0 on Saturday in a non-conference women's soccer match at rainy Mavec Field.
The Ladies (1-2) got off to a good start offensively on Saturday as
Samantha Hayes and
Meredith Rogers each fired on goal within the contest's first four minutes. Hornets keeper Anna Jacobson saved those shots but Kenyon still had a couple more chances later.
At the 25th minute,
Kiele Anderson fired into Jacobson's arms and almost 90 seconds later, Hayes' hard shot just missed going in after it deflected off the crossbar.
With the Ladies missing a few opportunities, the Hornets broke through with about eight minutes left on the first half scoreboard.
Dornesha Cottoms drove along the left side and her cross came to Emily Yergin, who appeared offsides. However, no whistle was blown and Yergin found herself one on one with Ladies keeper
Jillian Countey. The Hornets' junior fired and pushed the visitors ahead, 1-0.
In the second half, Shenandoah maintained its lead with the help of its defense. At no point did Kenyon attempt a shot.
By game's end, the Hornets held an 18-7 shot advantage. For Kenyon, Countey notched eight saves in defense.
Tomorrow, the Ladies will host Buffalo State (0-3-1) at McBride Field at 2:30 p.m.
