GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Lane Davis racked up 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists Wednesday night, while junior
Paige Matijasich tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds. The dual double-doubles helped steer the Ladies basketball team to a 56-52 victory over a persistent Hiram College Terriers squad.
The win was the third straight for Kenyon (12-5, 6-3 NCAC) while the loss was the fourth in the last five games for Hiram (8-9, 2-6 NCAC).
Davis split up her stats pretty evenly between halves and finished 5-of-8 from the field and 1-of-2 at the free throw line. The double-double was her second of the season and the fourth of her career.
Matijasich, on the other hand, scored all ten of her points and grabbed seven of her 11 rebounds in the second half of play. Her double-double was the fourth of the season and sixth of her career.
Those two stat lines were complemented by 14 points and five assists from senior
Jessica Gerber, as well as seven points and four rebounds from freshman
Grace Connery.
Despite the impressive numbers from that group, Kenyon just couldn't shake the Terriers, who never trailed by double digits and pulled within two points on three different occasions in the fourth quarter.
The first of those three times the Terriers moved within a bucket, Connery responded with a jumper in the paint to give the Ladies a 44-42 lead. Hiram answered and Matijasich responded next, keeping Kenyon ahead 48-44 with 3:58 left in the game. Then, after some late-game strategizing from both teams, Gerber drained a pair of free throws to seal the victory with five ticks left on the clock.
The Kenyon defense held Hiram to 32.8 percent shooting, but the Terriers were able to hang around thanks in part to Kenyon's 4-of-22 performance (18.2 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
Kenyon started out the game with a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play. Hiram went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter to claim a 24-20 edge, but the Ladies closed out the half with a three-pointer from Connery and two points each from Davis, Gerber and
Sharon Hull to go into the break with a 29-28 advantage.
Kenyon controlled the third quarter, moving ahead by as many as nine points, while holding Hiram to just four field goals and nine points in the period.
Tashuana Wright carried Hiram for most of the night. She finished with a game-high 24 points. Cici Bright threw in 14 and Erica Johnson racked up a team-high nine rebounds for the Terriers, who were out-rebounded, 47-37, as a team.
