No. 13 Wooster runs away from Lords

WOOSTER, OhioThe No. 13-ranked College of Wooster (17-3, 12-1 NCAC) defeated Kenyon College 105-67 on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference men's hoops game at Timken Gymnasium.

Danyon Hempy led all scorers with 24 points as the Fighting Scots hit a season-best 60 percent from the field and converted all 11 free throw attempts.

For Kenyon, Carter Powell scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and corralled five rebounds. Alex Cate added 11 points and hauled in a team-high six boards.

After a quick 6-0 start by the Fighting Scots, the Lords (1-19, 0-13 NCAC) scored on four of their next six possessions and brought the tally to 12-10 following Powell's long ball at the 14:27 mark.

Over the next five minutes, Wooster attained nine-point leads three different times with its last coming after a Keon Scott three-pointer. That shot moved the scoreboard to 32-23 with about 9:30 minutes left.

Cate and Ugnius Zilinskas were able to hit back-to-back layups after that, pulling the Lords to within five (32-27), however, Wooster responded again. The home team scored the next nine points, including seven from Hempy, to push its lead to 41-27. By the end of the half, the Fighting Scots led 51-39.

Kenyon's offensive performance in the first was its best all season as it hit 59 percent from the field and 54 percent from deep. But Wooster was equally as good, shooting a 60-percent clip and converting all seven of its free throws. Plus, the Fighting Scots turned nine Kenyon turnovers into 12 points.

The second half was a different story as the Lords' hot shooting cooled off. In the stanza, Kenyon hit 32.4 percent while the Fighting Scots connected on at least 54 percent of its attempts from three-land and the field.

That helped Wooster pull away. Over the first 10:01 of the half, Wooster tallied 33 of the next 40 points, and built an 84-46 advantage.

Next on the schedule for the Lords is a road date at Wittenberg University on February 2 at 1 p.m.
