GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators rallied in the second half of Saturday's basketball game and then sank eight of ten free throws during the final four minutes to pull out a 66-57 road win against the Kenyon College Lords.
Thanks to 12 first-half points from junior
Carter Powell and 10 more from freshman
Elijah Davis, Kenyon (1-12, 0-6 NCAC) owned a 30-23 lead at the half. On the other side of the court, Allegheny (5-7, 1-5 NCAC) got 10 points from Jordan Rawls, but shot just 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) as a team during those first 20 minutes.
The Gators tweaked their plans at half and came back out attacking the paint. They opened the second period on a 9-2 run, tying the game at 32-32. Rawls scored the first bucket of the run and Jordan Greynolds followed with seven consecutive points for Allegheny.
Kenyon answered with a three-point play from
Ugnius Zilinskas and jumper from
Ryan O'Neil, but the Gators quickly cut back into that five-point margin, keeping things close for the next few minutes of play.
With 10:17 left in the game, a layup from Zach Ecker gave Allegheny a lead (44-43) it would not relinquish. Over the next eight minutes, the margin never grew more than four points, but Kenyon just couldn't come up with a clutch bucket to reclaim the lead.
Two free throws from Davis at the 4:12 mark pulled the Lords back within one point at 54-53, but the Gators countered with one free each from Brian Roberts, Jr. and Ecker. Roberts then tacked on a field goal and put the Lords in a position in which they had to foul.
While Allegheny went on to can eight of its last ten free throws, Kenyon made just two of its final eight field-goal attempts and committed a couple of turnovers that allowed the Gators to escape with the win.
Allegheny connected on 45.5 percent (15-of-33) of its second-half shots. That included 28 points in the paint, after scoring just 10 down low in the first half. The Gators' work under the rim also resulted in a 17-of-23 performance at the free throw line.
Rawls was a perfect 6-of-6 at the stripe and led all players with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Greynolds finished with 14 points. Roberts tallied 13 and Ecker had 12 for the Gators.
Kenyon struggled with the long ball when it mattered most, going 1-for-11 on second-half three-point attempts.
Powell wound up with team-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds. Zilinskas dropped in 15 points and Davis finished with 13.
