GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College and Ohio Wesleyan University battled through 90 minutes of scoreless soccer on Tuesday, but the first 10 seconds of overtime made all the difference, as senior
Fallon Raviol notched the game-winner for the host Ladies.
The important North Coast Athletic Conference win temporarily moved the Ladies out of a third-place tie with Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg University. The Ladies are now 3-1-0 in NCAC play and 6-6-0 overall. The loss dropped the Battling Bishops to 2-2-0 in the NCAC and 7-7-0 overall.
From the first moment of overtime, Kenyon junior
Caroline McNeer sent a through ball to the right side. Raviol raced to it and blasted it past Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Taylor Floyd. It was Raviol's team-leading sixth goal of the season, as well as her third game-winner. The assist was McNeer's team-best fifth of the season.
Back in the first half of play, Kenyon had plenty of chances and just couldn't convert. During those first 45 minutes, the Ladies outshot the Battling Bishops 11-4. They also logged eight corner kicks, compared to none for Ohio Wesleyan.
McNeer had the Ladies' first two chances, but the first of those was punched over the crossbar by Floyd. The second, coming from the right side, was also saved by Floyd, who was diving to her right.
In the game's 26th minute, Kenyon junior
Maddie Ladd ripped a shot from the top of the box that just missed to the right. Later, as time was winding down in the half, Floyd came charging out of the box to play a loose ball. Kenyon freshman
Lara O'Callaghan beat Floyd to the ball and played a pass to her right, where
Morgan Engmann took control. Engmann raced toward goal, but misfired on her shot, taking the game into halftime with a couple of zeroes still showing on the scoreboard.
The second half was a little more balanced, with each team getting a handful of legitimate scoring chances. Ohio Wesleyan hit the right post eight minutes into the half. Raviol later countered with a pair of good looks, only to be turned aside by Floyd.
In the game's 73rd minute, the Battling Bishops had a three-on-two, leaving Brooklynn Buck alone of the left side. Her shot, however, went right into the hands of Kenyon goalkeeper
Jillian Countey, who was in excellent position.
Countey ended up making three saves throughout the game and was supported by a defense that yielded just ten shots. Additionally, the back line of McNeer,
Annie Hesse,
Thaise Sudano and
Kiele Anderson held Ohio Wesleyan junior Ashley Smiley to just three shots. Smiley entered the contest as the NCAC leader in goals (12), assists (4) and points (28).
Up next for the Ladies is a stretch of three conference road games, beginning with one at The College of Wooster on Wednesday, October 23.
