GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing 1-0 with less than seven minutes left, Wabash College found an equalizer and then held off No. 7 Kenyon College in the overtime periods to earn a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Mavec Field on Saturday.
The North Coast Athletic Conference contest saw the Lords move their record to 11-1-2 and 3-0-2 while the Little Giants moved to 8-4-2 and 3-1-1.
Leading up to the end, Kenyon had ample opportunities on the offensive end. In the first half, the Lords out-shot Wabash 11-4 and had five on-goal attempts.
Jack Cohen had a hard strike at 38:05 but Wabash goalie Chad Wunderlich denied it. Less than a minute later,
Atli Hrafnkelsson found
Philippe Stengel with a through ball near the right post but once again, Wunderlich denied the shot.
There was one more quality look for the home squad. At 42:52, freshman
Minka Soumah retrieved a saved shot and fired from in front but that attempt was blocked.
After the break, Kenyon was able to break through in the 78th minute. Stengel made a great pass to freshman
Trevor Gleason and the first-year shot from inside the 18 to the right corner.
Around the 84th minute, Stengel appeared to be fouled in the Wabash goalie's box. No whistle was blown, and the aftermath saw the Lords earn a red card. With a man-up advantage, the Little Giants were able to find the equalizer.
With less than a minute to play, a foul was issued and on the ensuing free kick, Michael Tanchevski headed back a deflection to tie things up.
The overtime sessions saw the Lords fight and out-shoot the visitors 6-2. However, just one shot, an attempt by
Scott Upton in the 92nd minute, was on target. Wabash had a chance at a goal from Adam Berg in the second OT, but it went wide.
By game's end, the Lords held a 24-6 shots advantage and had more corners (8-1). The team will look to get back in the win column on October 22 when it visits The College of Wooster at 4 p.m.
