OBERLIN, Ohio – A 2-1 road victory for the Kenyon College Ladies soccer team over Oberlin College not only boosted the team's record to 8-6-1, but also helped secure a spot in next week's four-team North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The result extended Kenyon's program-record run of making the conference tourney for the sixth straight year.
On Tuesday night, the Ladies got a good effort from Oberlin (4-14-1, 0-8 NCAC), but the purple and white's pressuring offense kept the home squad from forming much of an attack of its own.
Kenyon put great force on the Oberlin defense throughout the first half, out-shooting the hosts 14-3. However, by the end of the first stanza, the score was tied 1-1.
Oberlin seized the first lead of the game about nine minutes in. Olivia Weeks hit a long ball to Sydnie Savarese who dribbled right, and then fired from outside the box over keeper
Jillian Countey. Kenyon responded less than five minutes later.
At 13:04,
Gwyneth Phillips found a streaking
Fallon Raviol who got behind the Oberlin defense. A few paces later, Raviol beat Yeowomen goalie Isabelle Smith and fired into an open net. It was Raviol's team-leading seventh goal of the year.
There were two more solid opportunities the rest of the half. Raviol nearly put back a rebounded save near the right post while Countey made a diving stop on a Lucy Fredell shot in the 34th minute.
Second-half action continued to favor the Ladies on the offensive end. Six of the first eight shots when Kenyon's way and at the 55:40 mark the 1-1 tie was broken. With Raviol patrolling the right side, the senior crossed a pass right in front of the net. From there,
Olivia Dion headed it just past the goalmouth.
After that, Kenyon's defense never allowed the hosts to find any on-target shots against Countey.
Next on the schedule for the Ladies is Senior Day against DePauw University at Mavec Field on November 2 at 1 p.m.
